If you are thinking of seeing southern Iceland by campervan or car, you are in for a treat. Iceland’s landscape is no joke. One moment you might pass by a mountain with 15 waterfalls (I’m not even exaggerating) gushing out of it, and then in another instance, you might be passing by a herd of grazing gorgeous Icelandic horses. Traveling by campervan will make your trip efficient and will let you maximize your time in this achingly beautiful country. If you still need some convincing, then read my guide on Exploring Southern Iceland by Campervan and then come back here when you are ready. This itinerary will give you point to point directions on some of the best sights that Southern Iceland has to offer.

If you’re already on board… let’s plan this trip to Iceland

You will likely fly in and out of Iceland’s Keflavik airport, which is 45-minutes away from Reykjavik, the capital. Most car rental companies are near the airport, so it makes the most sense to arrange for your car pickup upon arrival. This will also spare you from spending money on the airport to Reykjavik shuttle, which is about 3.300 ISK or $31 USD for a one-way ticket. I would recommend staying overnight in Reykjavik to get your bearings, check out the city, and go grocery shopping before you embark on your grand campervan adventure. I’ve also put together a list of places to check out in Reykjavik towards the bottom of this post.

Frolicking around like a third grader at the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap.

Yes, the waterfalls really are that magnificent and powerful. My friend Jiri snaps a photo at Seljalandsfoss.

The Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon made my imagination wander. I saw the river as a majestic blue serpent winding its way throughout the rough canyon walls.

This United States DC-3 airplane had a forced landing on Sólheimasandur’s black beach in 1973. Luckily, all crew members survived the crash and this site has since become a place of curiosity.

Our group made it a priority to hike to the Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River. This paid off in spades because we had the entire hot spring to ourselves!

If you happen to be spending more time in the capital, here are a few things to do in Reykjavik:

I’ve eaten a lot of pastries and carbs all around the world. I’ll be honest when I say that Brauð & Co’s goods moved me to tears.

I wish you the best of luck on your Icelandic road trip adventure. Remember to plan well, heed all weather warnings, be an alert driver, and do try a gas station Icelandic hot dog with extra crispy onions on top.
