Quilotoa Loop Trek

Day 1 – Quito to Latacunga

Saturday, November 25

    • Arrive in Quito by noon
    • Explore Old Town
    • 4:30pm take the bus to Latacunga from the Terminal Quitumbe

Buses leave every 30 minutes (or less) from Terminal Quitumbe, the terminal on the south side of Quito.  The bus to Latacunga takes just over an hour and costs about $1.50. You can reach Terminal Quitumbe via the Trolebus, taking it all the way to the last stop, going South.  The Trolebus is an electric bus line that runs all the way through Quito, from the north, to the Terminal Quitumbe in the south.  You can check out a trolebus map, and an extensive trolebus website in English.

Day 2 – Latacunga to Sigchos (trailhead) to Insinlivi

Sunday, November 26

  • Reminder to download offline Google Maps to phone
  • Walk to bus terminal in Latacunga (10-minute walk from Plaza Vicente Leon or a cheap taxi ride that is less than $2)
  • Note: There is a large supermarket next to the terminal, which is a great place to load up on snacks and water before the trek
  • Take the 9:30am bus – travel 2 hours to the trailhead in Sigchos (there is also a 6:00am bus, or busses that depart every half hour until 12pm, then every hour until 6:00pm)
  • Begin trekking at 12:00pm
  • Hike Sigchos – Insinlivi – 13.2 km, 5 hours – 1:30 – 7pm
  • Stay in Insinliv overnight // Llulu Llama or Hostal Taita Cristobal


Day 3 – Insinlivi to Chugchilan

Monday, November 27


Day 4 – Chugchilan to Quilota Caldera to Latacunga

Tuesday, November 28

  • Hike Chugchilan – Quilotoa. – 18km, 6 hours, hardest day
  • This hike passes through some beautiful indigenous villages and you can see that you are getting to the higher altitude areas, dryer, and rocky mountains. The last bit is a steep climb up the crater, with a surprising and stunning view over the lake when reaching the top.
  • Take the bus back to Latacunga from Quilotoa.
  • Stay in Latacunga overnight // Hotel Endamo
  • For a more economical option, stay at Hostal El Vaquero


Day 5 – Latacunga to Quito

Wednesday, November 29

  • Latacunga to Quito in the morning
  • Explore Quito
  • Overnight in Quito // Hump Day Hostel
